A Lost Love Found...

"When you love someone, let her go..
If she comes back to you, she's yours to keep"

The famous saying crept to my mind when I was watching the latest Charlie Kaufman's movie, "The Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind".

Through the very twisted storyline, the underlying message that the writer's trying to convey did not escape me. Even though how hard you try to erase someone you truly love from your mind, true love will always prevail.

The movie is actually about how Joel (Jim Carrey) tries to erase the memories of his relationship with his girl, Clementine (Kate Winslet), after finding out that she had done the same thing and does not remember who he is to her. During the process, while in his deep sleep, the technicians (Elijah Woods, Mark Ruffalo) systematically conjuring up his memories of Clementine in order to erase it totally from his mind. As Joel travels back through his memories of the relationship-not the most recent ones, which come first and are nasty, but the earlier ones, the moments in which Joel and Clementine had a deep and pure connection-he remembers what he loved in her. He goes to a heartbreaking time in which she talks about her fears of being ugly as a child, and he pleads with the technicians in the heavens (who can't hear him-he's sleeping): "Please let me keep this memory." The scenes after that goes showing how Joel tries to hold on to those memories, not letting go. He tries to push it way back in his mind where it falls outside the map that the technicians are trying to erase.. (twisted... yeah I know...)

I love how they end the whole thing. Joel and Clementine actually found each other, without realising the fact that they had gone the extra mile just to erase each other from their minds.

"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd."
-Alexander Pope-
