I remembered a story that my World Literature lecturer had told us during one of his lectures....
Note: this is a simplified version of the story.
Boy and girl met and became good friends. They spent most of their waking hours together doing almost everything. It was no surprise when they finally declared their feelings for each other.
However, boy had to go abroad to further his studies in medicine. Hence, they both vowed to wait for each other. They made a promise that they will be together until the day they die. Girl stayed on and finished her degree locally while waited for boy to come home. Boy was determined to prove to girl that he was worth the wait.
Soon after graduation, boy got an offer that he just couldn't resist, to practice medicine in the UK. Girl got tired of waiting and had to agree with her parents for an arranged marriage. Boy was devastated with the news and decided to take up the offer and stayed on for a few more years just to forget about girl.
Girl was happy with her marriage. Boy too finally met someone in the UK and settled down. Both couples were blessed with happy families.
At the age of 50, boy finally decided to come back to his homeland. He had nothing to hold on to anymore back in the UK. His wife had died of cancer and his children are all leading their own separate lives. He suddenly thought of girl and wanted to find out how she had faired after all these years. There was never a minute when he didn't think about her. She was forever in his heart.
Hence, as soon as he reached his homeland, he tried every possible way to trace girl down. And he finally found her, living with her husband in their old neighborhood. Girl was shocked to see boy standing at her doorstep one morning. The shocked feeling was soon being replaced with the feeling of joy to have found her best friend once again.
Girl introduced boy to her husband and they soon became fast friend. However, their friendship didn't go beyond anything else because of girl's loyalty towards her husband. Boy understands it and just kept his feelings to himself.
5 years later, girl's husband died. Boy was beside her constantly to lend a shoulder. They suddenly realised that the feelings that they had shared ages ago didn't just die when both of them tied the knots with their partners. It was actually buried deep inside them, and now it has been let loose.
Both boy and girl never again spend more than a few hours apart from each other. They managed to spend what was left of their old days together. And true to their promise, they were together until the day girl died. Even after that day, boy continued to visit her grave every single day, bringing a single white rose for her tombstone that reads "my best friend.. my love".
And as if they just can't bare to be separated for long, boy soon after grew weaker by the day and finally died and was buried next to the girl's grave. That was how the love story ended, with boy and girl lying next to each other.
*sigh*
It's amazing how strong love can be.

hehehe... i wanted to put "man".. but might else well carry on with the "boy" for simplicity purposes.. actually the "boy" is a famous poet.. but i can't seem to recall his name..
kiezamy:
very very true indeed...
then only u will value it even more.
:D
How nice. Sigh. *I somehow still want to believe that fairytales are based on real events.*
can I skip all the years ahead straight to 50 where I meet "boy" and live happily ever after? heheh!
I actually know a guy who actually got married at age 40++ to his first love. Something happen along the way that got the lady married to another guy, who later passed away (or something, I didn't pay attention on that part) and few years after that, they met each other again, which sparks the long lost love between them.
That's all I know.
bayah:
*sigh*
aren't we such a sucker for anything romantic... hehehe
