Today, many parents took half day leave just so they can send their kids off to their first day in primary one. The road in front of the primary school near my area was jammed packed with cars and busses, loading off tiny little beings carrying huge backpacks. Even my favourite radio station were interviewing callers who were sending off their kids on their first day of school.
I remembered when it was my first day of school. Dressed in the blue and white dress, I walked into the school gate alone, unattended by my parents. Earlier, Mom had briefed me on what to do on my first day, where to go, and so on. Hence, armed with the big 50 cent shilling as my pocket money, I carried my yellow backpack and headed straight to my class, 1 Marikh.
There I sat, timidly, minding my own business in class when one lady approached me..
Lady: Adik nieh nama apa?
Me: Binx..
Lady: Ha.. nieh anak Aunty, L..
Me: Hi L
L: Hi Binx..
Lady: Haa.. bagus dah kenal..
Lady: Binx kawan dengan L ya.. Aunty nak kena pergi office nieh..
Binx: Ok Aunty..
That was how I met my first friend. We sat together, checking out each other and eyeing the rest of our classmates before the teacher called for attention.
Teacher: Selamat pagi semua...
All: Se-la-mat *gasp* pa-gi *gasp* cik-gu!
Then the administration work began. We were called one by one to take a snapshot for the report cards. Ah.. I still have that picture in the report card... cute lil' binx on her fist day of school... hahaha
Recess was the best part of the day. I went to the canteen with one new
The canteen then became my favourite refuge until my last day of school. Everything was affordable back then.. With 50 cents you can buy 3 packets of the 15 cents nasi lemak; or 10 packets of the 5 cents mamee; or 2 Paddle pop ice cream; or 10 ice cream batang; or 2 plates of mee hoon.. you get the drift. My only obstacle during those days were to be able to attract the Makcik Kantin's attention due to my cute size...
No, I did not cry nor pulled any mengada stunts during my first day of school. Maybe it was because I have spent almost 2 years in kindergarten that I am used to the classroom environment by then. That was also the reason why my parents did not bother to wait up for me, because they know that lil' binx is one independent girl.
Back then, parents don't really fuss much about their kids. The most that they do was just send the kids off to school before heading to work. However, nowadays, some parents are even worst than their kids, in terms of fussiness. They fuss around about the classroom, they fuss around about the teachers, they fuss around about the fees and they even fuss around about other kids (standard one kids!!) that their son or daughter should and should not play with. Sometimes you can get confused as to whose first day was it in the first place...
binx: if only we could turn back time... *sigh*

that so reminded me of my first day in school too... my mum sat me down in front of this chinese girl, and asked "hi, what's your name?"
she replied, "wong ching yee."
and that's how I made my first friend in standard 1.. :D
yea, "those days" our parents never really fussed about us at skool, kan? I remember asking my mum once, "eh, did u stay with me at skool ka, on my first day?" and she said "no... u din cry oso... u were fine..."
hahahaha!
I was in 1 Utarid!!
Yep I can remember my first day of school. I had that yellow back too and my shoes were way too big. Apparently they would shrink to size when u wash them! So I was falling out of them all day.
I already had a best friend already when I stepped into standard 1. We were in the same kindergarten. And we were in the same class right up to standard 6! We were inseparable.
1st day of school I tak ingat sgt .. all I remembered was this one girl who cried the whole day. Me .. I was a good boy :D ..
Semalam, tgk the scenes at the schools near my apt, aiyaa ..rasa dah tua a bit mah ..;-p
Dgr lagu Johnny Hates Jazz " Turn Back The Clock "

wow! ingat lagi! nih baper puluh tahun lepas nye citer ni? :)i dulu 1 Anggerik.
I had senior friends (darjah 2 - 3) when I went into my std 1 back then, because they were my neighbors and we've known each other for years already at that point. dah tak ingat kelas apa I masuk, but I remembered the teacher - so garang, she once broke the 1-metre teacher's ruler while hitting the table because the class was so noisy! And she was also my neighbor! *Gasp*
One more memory of Std 1 was being bored, sebab apa yg dok belajar dalam kelas tu I dah belajar from my senior neighborhood friends yg balik sekolah dok main cikgu2 dgn I back when they were in Std 1..LoL.
I thot men are from Mars? :P
Just like you, my dad "abandoned" me at the school gate and off he went to work. Dia pesan, nanti balik tunggu kat sini! When school was over, i parked my bag "kat sini" and pegi main. And then after 15 mins, i went back to "kat sini", my Dad dah pegang bag berdiri cekak pinggang "mana ko pegi? bapak suh tunggu kat sini kan?". Hahahah, dia x marah to the max, just told me FIRMLY.
* i once muntah dlm kelas. yay yay! teek muntah dlm kelas! yay yay!
For my 1st day, I walked for about 1.5km to school with a neighbour (4 yrs older). My parents tak hantar pun (they already showed me the way during registration).
Now for my nephews, the school is just a few hundred metres away, tapi semua kena hantar/ambik naik kereta! So berlemak la kids these days.
